Dangers of Smoking on Passive Smokers

One of existing misunderstanding about cigarette smoking is the myth that young men generally get addicted fast to cigarette smoking, but actually it has been found that young women adapt this bad habit much quickly than young men. However , the damage caused by cigarette smoking on human health , in general is devastating.

Following this myth is that, passive smoking is not very harmful since it is not the direct inhalation of smoke. But the hard truth is, even passive smokers have high risk of lung cancer, heart attacks, breast cancer, etc.

It is proved that dangers of smoking are not only destroying the health of the chain smoker but also showing the dangers of smoking on the health of persons standing nearby him. Cigarette smoking is a synonym of death because it increases the risk of heart attacks (Smoking and Heart Diseases) and heart strokes making them the worst victims.

It has been scientifically proven that passive smokes are more dangerous to health than firsthand smoke. The smoker, who inhales the smoke “filters” it so some degree before exhaling it, but the non-smoker around him/her inhales the “pure” and more dangerous side stream smoke. Besides, the tar and nicotine in passive smoke have several cancer causing substances in much higher concentration than in mainstream smoke. So, the person who smokes in public, around people, is giving himself/herself a lower dose of poisons, and giving his family members, friends and strangers around him/her a higher and a more deadly dose of poison.

Attention has usually been focused on children, but research indicates that everyone, from babies to the elderly is more susceptible to disease if spending time in the company of smokers. In fact research has shown that tobacco fumes are 20 times more toxic than are exhaust fumes.

Children who live with parents who are smokers are more likely to suffer from asthma and ear infections and if already asthmatic, smoke can bring on an attack. Other immediate results are coughing, headaches and nausea. Further long-term effects include possible cardiovascular problems. The World Health Organization has estimated that 50% of the world’s children are exposed to smoke in the environment, which could have shocking effects over the long term.

The main ailment associated with smoking are lung cancer and heart disease and it may come as a surprise to learn that breathing in someone else’s smoke can put anybody at risk of exactly the same health problems. In fact, if a person is subjected to passive smoking over time, he or she has a 20-30% increase of getting lung cancer and for heart disease the figure is between 25-35%. Most alarmingly, the possible increase in risk of stroke is over 80%.

Passive smoking causes bronchitis and pneumonia each year in infants and young children less than 18 months old. It is a grave problem and has to be addressed at once. Passive smoking has always raised an alarm among innocent people who fall a prey to deadly diseases like cancer, heart attacks and other health ailments. It is of prime importance to combat passive smoking by adhering to laws that has been designed to make smoking in public an offence.
