Cigar Smoking and Pipe Smoking

All forms of tobacco are hazardous to our health. There is no safe tobacco product at all .It is a common misconception that cigar smoking is less dangerous than cigarette smoking. Cigars are not safer than cigarettes, but because they are used differently, the health hazards differ somewhat as well. The basic difference in the pattern of cigarette n cigar smoking is that , most people who smoke cigars don’t smoke cigars on a daily basis .So this forms a major difference in the exposure to poisons and other carcinogens present in both cigars and cigarettes.

Now to throw more light on cigars, one cigar may contain as much tobacco as an entire pack of cigarettes. So a single cigarette typically has less than a gram of tobacco, while a single cigar may contain as much as 5 to 17 grams of tobacco. Cigars are addictive. Cigar smoke breaks down in saliva, allowing the smoker to easily absorb nicotine through the lining of the mouth in quantities sufficient to cause addiction, even if the smoke is not inhaled.

The amount of nicotine in a single cigar is many times greater than what is found in a cigarette. A typical cigarette contains one to two milligrams of nicotine, while the nicotine content of a cigar is 100 to 200 milligrams, with some as high as 400 milligrams.

Cigar smoke has higher concentrations of some toxic chemicals in cigars than in cigarettes. Cigar smoking has been linked to several different cancers, most notably those of the oral cavity, which include lip, tongue, mouth, throat and larynx. Cigar smokers who inhale are also at an increased risk for lung cancer, cancers of the pancreas and bladder, as well as heart and lung disease.

In a study conducted, it was discovered that cigar and pipe smokers are at an increased risk for early tooth loss, compared to that of their non-smoking counterparts. Cigar and pipe smokers are also at an increased risk for alveolar bone (the bone that holds the tooth in place) loss. Cigar and pipe smoking and exposure to second hand smoke in particular have been shown to be significant risk factors for erectile dysfunction.

All forms of tobacco have risks associated with them, and cigars and pipes are no different. Just like cigars, pipes have gone in and out of style over the centuries. Some of the earliest records of people smoking tobacco consist of the use of pipes. Pipes have been smoked for religious reasons and as signs of friendship.

More recently, pipe smoking has become a symbol for sophistication and relaxation. Just as is the case for cigars, the notion of what it means to be a pipe smoker is a by product of advertising. Pipe smoking simply can’t be without health risks because it involves smoking tobacco. It’s basically the same tobacco that’s put in the cigarettes, so it carries the same risks to the health.

The differences between cigarette and pipe tobacco are few. Just like cigarettes, pipes have loads of chemicals added to them. These chemicals do everything from improve the taste to ensure that the tobacco stays well lit. Pipe smoking by itself is not safe, and it’s definitely not a safe alternative to smoking cigarettes.

Quitting will involve hard work, and the roles of nicotine addiction, habit, and psychological addiction need to be addressed. However it is never impossible with the correct guidance and with a strong will power and determination. Smoking kills, so it’s time that people realise the importance of quitting and strive towards getting rid of the habit for good.
